We all have a pair of glasses on our nose, in a figurative sense. And then we think that we see the world as it is. We see what the world has become based on our own experiences and perception. Our stored memories are much linked to emotional experiences and our individual interpretation of them. Even if the same experience occurs to several persons, each of them registers his own interpretation of it. Just think of children brought up in the same environment, but they still evolve differently. Take the optimist who will only see the positive sides of life, while at the other extreme the pessimist, for whom everything is bad. It becomes even more challenging when we want to convince others of something, not realizing that we are imposing our vision of the world. Others may look at things differently. This is a frequent source of problems in business.

The Greek philosopher Epictetus said: “What really frightens and dismays us is not external events themselves, but the way in which we think about them.  It is not things that disturb us, but our interpretation of their significance”. Understanding our perception of life is a major breakthrough in the process of self awareness and self mastery. There are many aspects one may look at here, for example: traumatic events, childhood experience, ego, attachments, limiting belief systems or life scenario. Understanding yourself helps to solve conflicts better and to be a more loving and comprehensive communicator. All what you see and perceive is processed by the mind and therefore biased and finally adds up to our own story. But it is just a story.
