Playground

Let’s consider life as a playground, on which we are acting mostly without awareness. I believe that we have three major playgrounds: family, friends and our workplace. On these playgrounds we play out our games mostly in longer term relationships. Usually we don’t change partners, friends and companies every day. Since we have more permanent relations to manage, our personalities, patterns, talents and learning lessons emerge much easier. Playgrounds are sophisticated constructions, which enable us to make experiences through interaction with others, to develop further, to learn.

Let’s focus a bit on the company playground. Company and football playgrounds are not that different. In both cases we have competition, different players in our team with different roles going towards a certain goal and having a set of values or rules. The corporate world has its own rules and games, which are often very complex. Knowing and managing them can be decisive for our success. Everybody who has already negotiated budgets with the head office, knows how much playing is involved here. What are the roles we like to play on these playgrounds, independent of our job functions, what do they say about us? There is much to learn here from role play about ourselves and others.
